In their annual survey published at E3 today the have revealed that the gaming population has risen 3% to 68% of households.

Other findings of the survey include the fact that 42% of the US population have a games console, that the average gamer is 35 years old, and 77% of parents find parental controls useful.

One of the more complicated and interesting statistics is that for the first time the average length of time an adult has gone down - indicating that more Americans are getting into gaming for the first time. Credit crunch buster.

Another surprising nugget is that 43% of game players are female.

"This is the golden age of entertainment software. Our products are now being enjoyed by over two-thirds of Americans," said Big Mike Gallagher, CEO of the ESA, who would say that. "As the findings of the 2009 Essential Facts illustrate, more and more Americans across all demographics are now embracing the interactive entertainment experience that computer and video games provide."
