Chatting with Gamasutra.com this week, big wig Todd Hollenshead has said that his firm aren't about reselling game engines such as Tech 5, as much as they are focussed on creating top-notch new games.

"Our philosophy really hasn't changed from what it's always been, which is games first, licenses second," the CEO offered. "Working on and working on Doom, which are both id Tech 5 games, are certainly our top priorities."

id Software have licensed their game engines to other studios in middleware form in the past, although the third-party engine market has been dominated by the Unreal Engine in recent years.

"Our philosophy on that has been that we'd rather have a small number of good-fit, high-quality developer licensees than a bunch that aren't really good fits or that may not be that bright of a licensee anyway.

"We think that the licensees... are going to have an impact on how the technology is perceived."

id Software top brass is widely regarded as one of the finest programmers of game engines working in the games industry. He also likes rocket science.
