Nintendo profits up as Wii and DS sell big
Nintendo reveal their 2008 results, and look ahead to 2009
Nintendo have been lifting the lid on their latest financial results, confirming a strong performance for the 12 months ending in March.
Sales were up 9 per cent over 2008, while profits rose some 14 per cent to 555 billion Yen. Some 26 million Wii consoles were sold over the year, bringing the total over 50 million, while the DS is now well past the 100 million mark.
In software terms, some 197 million DS games were sold and 204 million Wii games. The biggest seller on the Wii was Mario Kart which topped 5 million, while the Brain Age series beat an incredible 31 million on the DS.
For the current financial year, Nintendo expects to see profits drop somewhat to 490 billion Yen - a fall of 11.8 per cent. The platform maker expects to sell 26 million Wii consoles and 30 million DS systems over the period.
