StarCraft II beta nears for Blizzard

Reports online suggest that Blizzard's beta test for StarCraft II is now getting under way, the developer dishing out specific invites via email.

We've nothing official on this from Blizzard, but some users have reported receiving an invite to join the test of the firm's eagerly awaited RTS title.

In anticipation of StarCraft II's launch, Blizzard yesterday confirmed the relaunch of Battle.net, the company's online multiplayer platform, which will be all about the RTS from the get-go.

We await official word on the beta, which should mean that the game is another step closer to release.

Update: Word in from Blizz today tells us that the beta hasn't quite begun... yet. Here's the official word: "I want to clarify that Blizzard Entertainment has not begun beta testing for StarCraft II and has NOT begun signups for StarCraft II beta. The opt-in box for betas on the Battle.net account creation screen will allow users to receive further information when we do begin signups for StarCraft II beta. I would appreciate it if you could amend your story and the headline with the correct information as soon as possible."
