id Software battle Quake Live crowds
Working to reduce strain in the beta
Quake Live is proving even more popular than developer id Software might have predicted - or wished for - the open beta of the developer's browser-based multiplayer FPS inundated with budding deathmatchers.
The game is a free-to-play online action game, presently available for the PC, which id plan to open up to the Mac and Linux soon. Queues vary between 20,000 and 50,000 players, such is the game's popularity, and the developer want to reduce these queues and get people playing.
"Reducing the queue size is our utmost priority. It can't be solved by throwing more hardware at it though, otherwise it'd be fixed already," the game maker admits in a new update.
Such is the popularity of the game that some players simply haven't been able to give the game a try yet - hence id's obvious efforts to get things up to speed. We'll keep an eye on the beta at it evolves.
