Sony pour cold water on PSP2 UMD rumours

With rumour last week, prompted by Acclaim's Dave Perry, suggesting that PSP2 - or the long-fabled PSP-4000 - will be an online-only handheld, devoid of the UMD media format, Sony have moved to play down such a move.

Casting Perry's assertion in doubt, word in from Sony tells us that UMD is important to the firm "this year and beyond", without specifically denying the rumoured plans.

That said, marketing big wig John Koller also made a point of saying that online distribution is a key part of the PSP's future, without going into specifics, reports Kotaku.

"We are making a concerted effort for digital distribution. We've talked to developers about increasing their digital download content," the exec assured.

Despite this move, Sony also feel the need to appease retailers, although even this age-old stance is changing: "Retail has been concerned about the digital side of game purchases, but that conversation has changed in the past nine to 12 months."

More PSP-4000 chit-chat as we get it.
