Leipzig's long-running annual gaming shindig, Games Convention, is officially dead in the water - despite show organisers insisting for months that the show will go on, despite a rival event being scheduled in Cologne for the same week.

This year's show was set to take place from August the 20th to the 23rd in the east German city, the show having grown every year since 2002 - becoming Europe's premier gaming event in recent years.

2009's big event will now be Gamescom, which will take place from August 19th to the 23rd, in Cologne.

German trade body the BIU has backed Gamescom since its announcement, leaving the death of the Leipzig show something of an inevitability, despite the protestations of its organisers.

See you in Cologne?
