Microsoft's internal ACES studio, the developer responsible for the long-running Flight Simulator series, is closing with the immediate loss of a whopping 1,400 jobs.

According to a statement from a representative, ACES was closed amid changes which "align our people against our highest priorities."

Microsoft are planning to axe a total of 5,000 staff, the company looking to cut costs amid tough economic conditions, which have also seen rivals such as cutting epic job numbers.

The Flight Simulator series is still expected to continue, however.

"We are committed to the Flight Simulator franchise which has proven to be a successful based game for the last 27 years," Kelda Rericha offered.

"You should expect us to continue to invest in enabling great Live experiences on Windows, including flying games, but we have nothing specific to announce at this time."
