Yet another record falls by the wayside in the face of Nintendo's 'disruptive' approach to gaming today, the platform holder revealing that last year the broke sales milestones for the most consoles sold in one year stateside.

Apparently, the Wii is the first games system to top 10 million in annual sales, having managed to deliver a whopping 10.17 million in 2008.

The handheld nearly made it past 10 million as well, settling on 9.95 million for the 12 months in question.

The DS had in fact held the record previously, with 8.52 million units in 2007. Overall, the Wii took a 55% console market share in 2008, the DS managing a gigantic 72%.

"Our type of entertainment has now moved to the point where there is no longer a question that if you offer consumers an expanded definition of what a videogame can be, and deliver that idea with quality and affordability in mind, millions of new people will start playing videogames," commented Nintendo's Cammie "Bling" Dunaway.

"Concepts like Wii Fit, and never would have seemed feasible just a few years ago, and now they’re driving growth for our the entire industry."
