Midway have this morning confirmed plans to make 180 developers redundant; that represents some 25% of the company's global workforce.

Apparently, the embattled publisher's Austin operation will be closed entirely, while on "non-core games" has been halted.

"The cost-reduction measures are vital for us to rationalize our operations and provide the resources necessary for our core properties to succeed," explained chief Matt Booty.

"These initiatives, along with the other steps we have taken this year, are a response to the specific challenges we are facing at Midway, many of which have been amplified by the current economic conditions."

Midway owner Sumner Redstone recently sold his huge stake in the publisher for just 100,000 USD, the company facing up to the prospect of bankruptcy as its share prices falls and cash reserves dwindle.

We'll be taking a look at Wheelman shortly.
