New Star Wars MMO goes micro-transactional
BioWare title will be not be subscription funded
Chatting with EA's investors yesterday (conceding that Christmas revenue is being revised downward in the face of disappointing sales), big chief John Riccitiello has revealed that the new Knights of the Old Republic MMO will be based on a micro-transactional business model.
BioWare's Star Wars: The Old Republic was expected to function on a traditional monthly subscription system, a la World of Warcaft, but it appears EA and BioWare have been eying the success of this South Korean approach to game funding.
"We are continuing to stick to the plan relative to building out our direct-to-consumer models which include micro-transactions and subscriptions," Riccitiello explained.
"The recent launch of Warhammer is a great example of that.
"Other initiatives we’ve announced, for example Star Wars online MMO, are mid-session games which are micro-transaction-based. You’ll be hearing more about those in the February call."
February it is. Thanks ShackNews.
