Sony axing thousands of jobs
But what of PlayStation?
While it is unclear to what extent the firm's gaming division will be impacted, Sony have today confirmed plans to axe 8,000 jobs worldwide - 5% of total staff - as well as shutting 10% of manufacturing sites.
The jobs will apparently go by April of 2010, although it is presently unclear which regions will be worst hit by this move.
Apparently, the Japanese economy has shrunk by far more than originally anticipated, according to reports, while the electronics giant is trying to cut production as demand eases off.
Sony hopes to save 1.1 billion USD by the end of the next financial year, but experts fear this dramatic move still won't be enough to avoid serious pain. We'll keep you posted on the exact impact of this on Sony's gaming interests.
