Far Cry 2 heading for DRM controversy?
SecuROM to be used for PC release
News online today reveals that Far Cry 2 is likely to make use of the controversial SecuROM protection system - which has been used in a number of PC releases in a bid to combat piracy, illegal copying and online sharing.
You may recall that Spore whipped-up a veritable storm using the technology in a bid to protect the game from would-be pirates; EA's release is still sitting atop the charts on file-sharing websites, however.
SecuROM will allow Far Cry 2 to be installed up to five times across three PCs - however, if you uninstall the game you'll get an online activation 'refunded' - so you should be able to install the game an unlimited number of times on three systems, assuming you properly uninstall first.
These measures sound somewhat less draconian than EA's previous efforts with releases like Mass Effect and most controversially in Spore. The measures taken with SecuROM there saw EA accused of making gamers pay full price for what was effectively a rental.
The game is out on October 24th.
