Garriott shoots for space
Game designer reaches for the stars
Richard Garriott, veteran game designer (most recently creator of NCsoft's struggling Tabula Rasa), is on his way to space as a space-tourist on the Russian Soyuz TMA-13 spacecraft.
Garriott will spend 10 days aboard the International Space Station, 225 miles above the Earth, and he'll be conducting experiments and taking photographs as part of a trip that has cost 30 million USD.
His father, Owen, flew Nasa's Apollo missions to Skylab some 35 years-ago, and Garriott has spent the last year training for the trip. Garriott is only the second Brit to go into space.
"I’m now feeling my British heritage a lot more than I used to, feeling proud of it. I hope British people will be proud of me too," Garriott told The Times before blast-off.
Beyond Tabula Rasa, 47 year-old Garriott has worked on the entire Ultima series at Origin, which he sold to EA in the 90s.
