Saturation looms for S. Korean games market
Future growth may be limited
Gaming is so pervasive in South Korea that apparently the industry is fast approaching saturation point, that's the word from gaming commentators talking to Edge.
South Korea is of course the birthplace of mass market online gaming, but there are concerns that the business could be fast reaching the limits of what is physically possible, given the country's population size.
"One of the biggest issues for South Korea itself as a country is that there are limitations to the country’s growth," offers Pearl Research boss Allison Luong.
"This is because so many people already own PCs and because of the country’s relatively small size. The concern for everybody in South Korea is that it’s at a saturation point."
Online gaming in Korea was worth one-billion USD in 2006, and will be worth 1.7 billion USD in the next year, it is predicted.
