Bungie hinted in their latest podcast that a large-scale Halo-related announcement might be forthcoming at this year's E3 expo.

It is now looking increasingly likely that something of the juicy variety will be confirmed, GameSpot citing a source "close to the developer", as revealing that a squad-based will be announced, presumably in Microsoft's press conference on Monday morning.

We're promised a "darker, grittier" Halo adventure, that will not feature series hero Master Chief, and will instead be a squad-based tactical shooter, similar in approach to "Ghost Recon and Gears of War".

A violent tale devoid of cartoon is the order of the day; UNSC forces duking out it with the empire known as the Covenant.

GameSpot's source believes the style of the new title will be greatly influenced by director Neil Blomkamp's Halo shorts. Co-op play could cover as many as eight, it is rumoured, while you'll be able to lead an entire squad through to the game's conclusion.

Microsoft aren't commenting, and this could be nonsense of course; although it just about seems plausible. We'll bring you more, live from E3, starting tomorrow.
