With having axed Cryptic's new - Universe Online - the developer announced their new project today, another superhero MMO in the shape of Champions Online.

Cryptic are the original developers of NCsoft's still-going City of Heroes, and were lined up to create an official Marvel MMO, before backers Microsoft got cold feet.

Champions Online will be crafted for the and 'consoles', and will allow you to assume the role of both heroes and villains.

Presumably this title will be created using elements salvaged from the defunct Marvel title, and that title was being developed for the PC and 360. Indeed, is it possible that this MMO is in fact pretty much the same game, devoid of Marvel's licensing?

Who will back Champions Online also remains a big question - having no doubt benefited from Microsoft's deep coffers in the past.

We'll bring you more on this as we get it.
