Valve art director chides industry
Demands more risks from game art
The art director of Valve's Team Fortress 2 reckons that games still have a long way to go artistically, before they can be regarded in the same light as other, more-established mediums.
"I think video games are at such infancy in terms of art style, actually developing it. We're dealing with 4000 years, really, of art and conceptual design", Moby Francke said in conversation with Gamasutra.com.
"For it really not to be utilised, and for the industry to basically dwell in a certain type of genre which has been around the 1980s up to present time, it's pretty much all they're embracing... Hopefully people will wake up someday."
The art director reckons that original and unique styles are often not found in games because developers and publishers are unwilling to take risks and break with convention. He believes that risks can have benefits, however, holding up TF2's approach as an example.
