Consoles banned in prisons amid terror fears
Radio 'capabilities' cited
Next-generation games consoles have been banned from UK prisons amid fears the technologically advanced systems could be used to coordinate terror attacks.
News in from The Sun newspaper suggests that the consoles could be used to send and receive radio signals, therefore presenting too much of s risk, it emerges. The Xbox 460, the PlayStation 3 and the Nintendo DS have all be culled amid these fears.
The PS3 was banned from UK prisons under guidance issued in late 2005, and it appears that the Xbox 360 and the DS are similarly dangerous. "The technology in the new generation of computer games makes them a security risk," an insider told The Sun. "There is concern that top terror suspects have been using systems already in jails. Radio software is an integral part of the equipment."
In the future, the report hints, all games consoles could be banned from prisons - amid unspecified fears that go beyond radio capabilities. More on this as we get it.
