HBO making 'in-game' Second Life documentary
More 'real world' interest in MMO
Another first in the cross-over between the real world and the virtual persistent worlds of MMOs this week, as we learn that US TV channel HBO are set to make a documentary about goings in Second Life. The clever part? The documentary will be filmed and produced entirely from within the game itself.
Despite not being the most popular persistent world out there (World of Warcraft must surely carry that accolade), Second Life has attracted more mainstream interest than most online games because of the freedom and flexibility it offers users, and because of the realistic economic models of the game - in which in-game real estate, objects and services can be acquired for real world cash.
While several companies and organisations have setup various branches and attractions within the game world, the BBC, the Swedish government and more also add credence to the significance of Second Life. HBO's documentary could further still the mainstream interest around Lynden Labs' creation.
Called Molotov's Dispatches in Search of the Creator: A Second Life Odyssey, the broadcast will last 35 minutes and will follow the avatar's progress as they explore the game, acting in the role of a traveller on a travel program, exploring, talking and observing.
The program will air next year, according to HBO.
