GC discovers Modern Warfare, new date spied
November 5th and Hummers
Demonstrating Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare at the Games Convention in Leipzig, Activision have revealed that the eagerly awaited PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 first-person shooter will launch worldwide on November 5th.
The publisher gave members of the press a good look at the game in a special promotional party held in the east German city yesterday evening, offering glimpses of the highly accomplished multiplayer experience as well as tasters of the singleplayer campaign.
Infinity Ward's Grant Collier was drafted into a public airing at the unusual if fitting party venue - a disused airbase, which was dutifully decked out in Call of Duty regalia, including several army vehicles. The series founder and studio chief is understandably enthusiastic about the new title, which he hopes will deliver unparalleled levels of immersive realism, coupled with a convincing plot.
Party goers were shown a new level from the title, witnessing the title's combat operative sneaking through Ukrainian ruins to oh-so quietly take out the bad guys, then creeping through long grass to evade in-bound soldiers and tanks. The scenario was certainly convincing, but what impressed most was the tangible sense of tension and the way action was integrated with plot, Infinity Ward having clearly put in the miles with their fourth CoD.
While both the Xbox 360 and PC versions of the game have been demonstrated, the PS3 version of the game has been conspicuously absent so far. That said, Activision helpfully distracted us with a convoy of Hummers enlisted to taxi GC-weary journalists to the shindig, so for style alone we won't pester them too much on the PS3 outing. Yet.
