Mafia 2 is officially on the way, that's the news in this evening from publisher Games, who also inform us that the new title is on the way to the 360, and PC.

As previously rumoured, Illusion Softworks are developing this sequel, having also worked on the first game, which sees players entering the seemy world of 1940s organised crime. A new plotline is the order of the day, backed-up by car chases and shoot-outs galore.

"As the original Mafia was a big success, we are excited to leverage the power of next generation console technology to create an all-new experience, while embracing the elements that resonated with the previous game's fans," rasped Christoph Hartmann, 2K made-man. "The 'wow' factor of Mafia 2 is definitely the benchmark-setting visual quality and that you expect to see only in Hollywood movies."

More on Mafia 2 soon, we'll wager, especially with the Leipzig Games Convention getting under way tomorrow. Bada-bing.
