Sony have confirmed that the is unable to use its maximum clock speed of 333MHz at the same time as Wi-Fi is enabled, meaning that PSP games cannot make use of the handheld's full potential and network play simultaneously.

"The recent upgrade (3.50) that removed the restriction on the PSP's CPU speed enables developers to utilize speeds either lower or higher than the default 222MHz, up to the full 333MHz clock speed. The article is correct that increased CPU speed cannot be used with the PSP's wireless feature," Sony's David Karraker explains on the Beyond3D article that points out the issue. "SCEA is working closely with the community to take full advantage of this new functionality where appropriate for their titles."

Game developers hoping to make best use of the PSP and embrace the Wi-Fi for may therefore be forced to create titles that use lower specs for multiplayer or downgrade their entire game to run at 222MHz all the time. Which is a shame, isn't it?

More on this as we get it.
