Rage is new id Software title
Multiplatform FPS with racing revealed
Speaking at id Software's QuakeCon event, John Carmack has lifted the lid on Rage, id's new title that will use the advanced Tech 5 game engine. Rage will be created for the PC, PS3, Xbox 360 and Mac.
id reveal that Tim Willits is in charge of design, story and gameplay, that will be created to best utilise the strengths of Carmack's Tech 5 technology. The game looks likely to be a little lighter than past id efforts, featuring plenty of outside gameplay, vehicles and monster-battling all viewed from the first-person perspective.
Indeed, id affirm that vehicles and racing will be a focus for the new FPS, that will include vast landscapes, ATVs and the ability to build up funds. The game is apparently on a four-year development cycle, and will fill either two DVDs or one Blu-ray.
While standard deathmatch may not be feature of the new title, co-op play could feature, especially making use of vehicles a la Halo - with one player driving and another manning the gun. Head-to-head racing will also be a feature, highlighting id's shift with this new game.
Carmack confirmed that cross-platform play will not feature, despite id's multiple platforms, while the engine design genius will not allow DirectX 10 to drive development on the title, the technical wizard telling attendees that no particular feature enthuses him so greatly.
We'll bring you more on id's Rage as we get it.
