Speaking at Sony's E3 press briefing Phil Harrison and have detailed a new model of the PSP, due out in September.

We're told that while the updated handheld boasts a similar size screen to the original, and still uses UMD media, that the differences are apparent when you hold the system. For a start the the console is 33% lighter and 19% slimmer. More over, the battery will last longer, and games will even load faster.

Hirai reveals that the new will also have the ability to output high-quality video, one of the system's most significant enhancements. We're told this will allow connectivity to a compatible TV or monitor, meaning that gamers can share their PSP's content 'on the road'.

Hirai demonstrated a trailer for Spider-Man 2 on a screen on-stage, demoing control of playback using the PSP as a remote control. We're also promised greater connectivity between the and the new PSP. The machine will come in 'Piano Black', white and 'Ice Silver', with other colours set to be revealed depending upon the region.

In North America the new handheld will cost 199.99 USD, coming with a copy of Daxter, a 1GB Memory Stick and Family Guy Frickin' Sweet on UMD.

Finally, we're told that Battlefront Renegade Squadron will be released exclusively on the PSP this autumn.
