Nintendo sets sales pace in N. America, Japan
Latest figures show Nintendo leading the way
Nintendo's 'disruptive' Wii and DS platforms are blazing a sales trail in North America presently, with the Wii selling more than the Xbox 360 and PS3 combined during the month of May. The console sold 338,000 units, compared to the 360's 155,000 and the PS3's 82,000.
In the handheld market the Big N were similarly dominant, the DS shifting 423,000 versus the PSP's 221,000. Despite the marketing focus on next-gen systems, the PS2 also outsold the 360 and the PS3, selling 188,000 units for the month. Nintendo games also dominate the software charts, only Spider-Man 3 providing the platform holder with genuine competition.
A similar picture is painted via the latest sales figures from Japan, with Nintendo leading the way for the week-ending June 10th. The Wii sold over 64,000 units over the week, compared to the PS3's measly 8,776 and the Xbox 360's dismal 2,553.
The DS, meanwhile, shifted a mighty 117,193, compared to the PSP's 24,711. The PS2 once again out-sold the PS3 and Xbox 360, too, proving that reports of the system's demise are greatly exaggerated.
