Moore defends Rare's contributions
Striking back
Microsoft boss Peter Moore has this week been defending the contribution of expensively-purchased UK developer Rare, dismissing the suggestion that the studio has failed to live up to its billing critically and commercially, despite having Microsoft's big budget push behind them.
Moore told Newsweek that Perfect Dark Zero and Kameo: Elements of Power were both 'platform-driving' titles, which helped define the new aims of the Xbox 360 console. Moore contends that such titles helped promote the 360 as a family entertainment hub, and signaled Microsoft's move away from the mature-rated titles that de-marked the original Xbox console.
He added that these 360 launch games 'realised' Microsoft's targets, and help deliver a fresh outlook for the new system - though gamers might contend that neither lived up to lofty billings.
On Rare's latest directions, Moore stated that the developer is given a degree of flexibility about what they create, and that 'adult' games of the shooter ilk might still emerge from the firm in the future. "We always allow them the reins to sit down with us when we do concept reviews and allow their creativity to say, 'Here's something three of us have been working on. We've got an idea, and we'd like to prototype this out.'"
