Wii sales near six million
Big N close on Microsoft
Nintendo's cunning plan to 'disrupt' the way we play games, and perhaps more importantly who plays them, seems to be going rather well - with Wii worldwide sales of 5.84 million reported by the Big N. That's cumulative worldwide sales covering the innovative machine's first five months on sale.
The DS is also doing more than a little well, Ninty are understandably pleased to inform us, the DS and DS Lite having shifted a gigantic 23 million units worldwide in the last financial year alone. The handheld has now sold a total of 40 million globally since it first hit shelves in late 2004.
Some of the best-selling software of the last year or so also came from the DS, Super Mario Bros. topping 9.5 million, Brain Training exceeding 8.08 million. Nintendogs sales have also now surpassed 13.6 million (6.95 million last year).
In reporting these successes, Ninty are also quick to point out that their strategy of appealing to non-traditional gamers is paying off a treat; something we wouldn't argue with given our first-hand experience of the Wii as the ultimate party accessory. More soon.
